Ben Howard: New Orleans, LA 2015
The highlight of my weekend was going to New Orleans with 3 of my best friends to see Ben Howard live at the Civic Theater.
Not only was his show amazing, but the venue was great as well. I’ve been to the House of Blues in New Orleans before, but never been to the Civic Theater. I’d heard of it because of recent acts I wanted to see there that unfortunately didn’t work out like Passion Pit and Alt-J. But my first experience there last night was really great! Not only was the venue the perfect size, but the parking was a lot more hassle-free than the House of Blues. Plus, it’s right next to a great bar to go grab drinks before the show. The sound was perfect and the building was beautiful, with 2 levels of balcony seating. So, an all-around great experience! I hope to see more shows there!
We ended up getting an amazing spot – 2nd row right in the center. Even though we were right by a less-than-ideal (my nice way of saying super f*ing annoying) group of girls, it didn’t matter once the show started. The opener, Willie Mason, had a great folk sound. But he was almost too mellow and made me sleepy. He also didn’t really say much or interact with the crowd. Even so, I will definitely be listening to his music again.
But of course, Ben Howard was fantastic. His songs sound so much better live because you really get a feel for the energy and intensity of his performance. His back-up band was also great. They all played like 3 instruments and were constantly switching places and instruments for different songs. Not to mention they were all super attractive British men. So yeah.
