Marvelous Markets, pt. 3: Torvehallerne – Copenhagen

The Torvehallerne Market is one of the best things to do in Copenhagen

Torvehallerne Market. I touched on this market a little bit in my 2-day itinerary for Copenhagen, but I wanted to reiterate how totally awesome this food market really is AND prove that it is an absolute must-do when visiting Copenhagen!

Like everything in Copenhagen, this market is top quality in terms of cleanliness, retailers, and overall atmosphere. But, also like everything in Copenhagen, that quality makes it a little pricier. Pricey for a food market, but definitely a cheaper meal in the grand scheme of things in Copenhagen.

But it’s totally worth a visit, don’t worry!

You’ll find Torvehallerne near one of the more central metro stations in Copenhagen: Nørrebro. Even though it doesn’t have a sign (or at least I didn’t see one), it’s hard to miss because A. there’s always a bustle of people coming and going and B. It’s composed of 2 beautiful buildings, which are both made primarily of glass.

Every vendor stall is clean, bright, unique, and wonderful. You won’t find more than 1 stall selling the exact same thing. And, you won’t be disappointed by anything you choose. It’s basically foodie heaven. In some stalls you can buy ready-made meals, and at others you can buy components like meats, cheese, fruits, and breads to cook and make later for yourself.

Really, the only downfall of this market is that it’s just soooo hard to choose! Everything just looks so gooooood. As if it wasn’t hard enough wandering through BOTH buildings and taking mental notes of which stalls you want to come back to after seeing them all of first, when we went there was even MORE options outside because of a special event going on. On Wednesdays over the summer, the outside area is full of small-scale recreational farmers, urban gardeners and cooks to share home-made treats. When we visited, it just so happened to be a Mexican event with more stalls serving home-made Mexican food and drinks!

So, me being my indecisive self, it took me quite some time to finally choose what to get!

I ended up going with a meal from Grød, a stall where the specialty was porridge. And we’re not talking about “porridge” like a big pot of gooey oatmeal. No, we’re talking about Porridge 2.0. Risotto porridge, Indian porridge, fig porridge, quinoa porridge, Asian rice, porridge…you get the picture.

Anyways, I ended up going with the Indian porridge and my friend with the risotto. We absolutely loved both of them!

After some more roaming, I couldn’t help myself…I had to try something else! I chose to stick to my roots and see what the Mexican food in Denmark was like.

Turns out, not too shabby!

So, make sure to leave time for Torvehallerne during your next trip to Copenhagen. Whether it’s to just buy groceries or to have a meal – Torvehallerne provides the best quality options for both. I can pretty much guarantee that once you try it, you’ll definitely be back again for a quick meal during your trip!

Bon Appetit!
