Berlin’s East Side Gallery (in photos)

East Side Gallery – Berlin, Germany

In my opinion, one of the best free attractions in Berlin is the East Side Gallery – a section of the Berlin Wall that is now a memorial to freedom. This memorial is about a mile long and has 100+ paintings/murals on the East side of the Wall. These paintings were done in 1990s with themes of freedom, of the world changing for the better, of calls to action, of changing times, of hope, of happiness. And even on the overcast day that we visited, those messages came through bright, colorful, and powerful.

Just being able to see the Berlin Wall was a surreal experience. On top of that, the artwork displayed on the wall is absolutely amazing. I’m a huge fan of open air galleries and street art, so I spent quite a bit of time during my weekend in Berlin walking and inspecting all of the work on the Wall. Of course, some areas had been spray painted over with graffiti. But enough original art still remains to make it worth a visit! But enough talk! Here are some of my favorite spots during the rainy day stroll of Berlin’s East Side Gallery in photos…

Isn’t that so cool? I would definitely recommend visiting when you’re in Berlin, especially if you’re looking for something free to do! Even though the weather was rainy and overcast, it was still a great experience. In fact, I think the overcast weather actually made the paintings and artwork stick out even more. It was like the contrast of the dark sky with the brightness of the artwork made the artwork even more powerful.

Anyways, have a great weekend, everyone! I’ll be heading off to New Orleans to celebrate MARDI GRAS! Can’t wait to share all about it next week!
